For us, that means:
- Organising online and in-person events, which bring people together across disciplines.
- Teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
- Sharing our teaching materials online, whenever possible.
Below are some of the efforts we have been involved with.

Understanding the brain in theory and practice
In 2026, Marcus ran a series of 6 in-person workshops, with funding from the Crick Partnership Fund. Titled 'Understanding the brain in theory and practice', these sessions brought over 300 participants together (cumulatively across 6 events) for short seminars and longer, group-based discussions on topics at the intersection between experimental and theoretical neuroscience.

Neuroscience for machine learners
Neuroscience for machine learners
Marcus co-developed a new module which introduces students to topics at the intersection of neuroscience and machine learning. At Imperial, students take this course in-person. But all of our materials (videos, coding exercises and a textbook) are freely available online.

TReND-CaMinA
TReND-CaMinA
Marcus designed and led a half day 'Introduction to computational neuroscience' workshop for students on the TReND-CaMinA summer school in 2024 (Kigali, Rwanda), 2025 (Lusaka, Zambia) and 2026 (Nyeri, Kenya). All of the teaching materials from the course are freely available online.

Marcus designed and led a half day workshop on “Learning neural network architectures” to masters students at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in 2025 and 2026 (Cape Town, South Africa).

Spiking neural network models in neuroscience
Spiking neural network models in neuroscience
Marcus co-led the annual tutorial at COSYNE 2022 (Lisbon, Portugal) with Dr Dan Goodman (Imperial). This session, on spiking neural networks, attracted more than 250 in-person participants. All material, including text and code, is freely available online.

SNUFA seminars
SNUFA seminars
From 2022-2023, Marcus organized and hosted an online seminar series, called SNUFA – spiking neural networks as universal function approximators. These monthly sessions brought researchers from neuroscience and machine learning together, and gave PhD and postdoctoral researchers an opportunity to share their work. Recordings of the sessions are available on YouTube.
